Victoria Fuel Berth Trophy 4
Sunday 6th December 2009. Le Braye.
Wind WSW 5-7Bft Waves 4-8’
The final in the series was held in onshore winds and with a sizeable swell running. Beach break varied from 4 to 6 feet and with a dropping tide, the reefs started to break at about half tide, where large waves offered up large down hill slopes and fast up-wind wave riding conditions in the middle of the bay.
Ten sailors ventured out in difficult conditions, where reading the waves and the lighter winds inside the break, made sailing uncomfortable at times.
On form was Steve Melia, who showed no fear and went for some fast forward loops early on in the competition, setting the bar for others to follow. Rob Mc Alistair and John Gilmour also showed their worth by following with some excellent loops and made light work of the heavy waves with good upwind moves on the faces, throwing up some impressive spray.
Late in was Xavier Descamps, who sailed well beyond the competition session, but made up considerable points in a short space of time, but it was later, as the tide was getting low, that he caught some memorable large waves across the bay, which made impressive viewing from afar.
Also impressive was Steve Romeril who was charging on his Mistral board, getting great air on the way out, and also surfing some steep sections at speed near Rocco Tower. He gained good marks in this session and showed that he has become one of Jersey’s most experienced sailors.
The Series ended as it had started, with excellent conditions, and I think that all sailors will agree that this season has certainly been good for windsurfing.
